November 2023 - Can oranges, seaweed, and hemp be transformed into textiles without compromising aesthetics? Textile designer Tanja Kirst explores this question in the exhibition Planted at Officinet in Copenhagen. Natural plant fibers have been spun into yarn, dyed with bio-dyes, and transformed into tapestries at Textiellab in the Netherlands. The yarns include citrus (from Italian orange and lemon peels), pineapple (from pineapple leaves), seaweed (from seaweed extract), and hemp (from the hemp plant's stem). All are dyed with bio-dyes and spun into various compositions at TextielLab. Using Jacquard weaves, the yarns' properties are showcased in terms of structure, light reflection, color saturation, and intensity, creating a geometric abstraction of natural landscapes.
Launch of the Hemp Collection by Tanja Kirst Designed for Massimo Copenhagen During 3 Days of Design 2021. The Hemp Collection by Tanja Kirst is hand-woven with Italian hemp yarn, each thread made of 50 spun thin threads and dyed in bio color. This collection is part of an ongoing project exploring how hemp can be transformed into durable, sustainable textiles. Hemp requires little water, needs no fertilizer, and improves soil quality, making it essential for sustainable textile production. The fabrics are handwoven in a flat weave construction with unique color and weft effects.
